Where the stones live
Unique stalactites, huge rock domes and underground gorges will immerse you in an underground fairytale world!
The beginnings of Austria’s largest active water cave lead back into the darkness of the earth’s history. It is certain that there was a phase of particularly intensive stalactite formation in the Lurgrotte 30,000 years ago, but it is still unknown how old the oldest formations are.
At the beginning of the five-kilometer-long cave world, you are accompanied by the gurgling of the Lur stream, which soon disappears into the still unknown depths of the cave. Then you enter the realm of stalactites, their names seem like riddles: the Giant, the Leaning Tower, the Hermit, the Gypsy Tent – there are no limits to the imagination in this subterranean cosmos.
The bear grotto
And THE UNDERIRDISH DOM
The path leads through narrow corridors, grottos and niches – always accompanied by the dripping of water – to the bear grotto, where bones of the cave bear were found, which lived in Central Europe during the Ice Age and became extinct many millennia ago. You soon reach the large cathedral, one of the highlights of the one-hour tour. At 120 meters long, 80 meters wide and 40 meters high, it is one of the largest cave domes in Central Europe!

Discover the wild and romantic gorge
52 bridges and ladders help you over 100 meters of altitude, along water that trickles and gurgles in the gorge floor.
As early as 1873, a narrow footpath to the Kesselfall was laid out on the south side of the Rötschgraben ditch, known as the Augraben, and work began on the construction of a footbridge. At its end, you could already admire the large waterfall cascading down from a height of 38 meters at close range.
The hiking trail winds its way upstream across a meadow towards the gorge area. Several steep ladders connect from the bottom of the Kessel Falls up to a high bridge. The Kesselfall is a protected natural monument and a hike through the wild and romantic gorge is also popular with children due to its proximity to the water and the countless ladders and offers an additional nature experience with the Stone Gate.
Roman grave
On the trail of our ancestors
Discover the only restored Roman burial mound in the area. The 1.5 meter high Roman grave on the Krienzer-Kogl was discovered in 1962 and is the only Roman burial mound that was restored “in situ”, i.e. on the spot. An entrance (dromos) clad with stone slabs all around leads into a vault containing the ashes of deceased ancestors. Absolutely unique and worth seeing for young and old!
Parish church Semriach
The beautiful Gothic Semriach parish church was built at the end of the 15th century on the walls of an old Romanesque church. The foundation stone for the three-aisled central nave was laid in 1505 and the bell tower and presbytery were built around 1543. At that time there were 4 altars in the nave, which were integrated into the two baroque side altars that still exist today around 1653. The baroque high altar had to be replaced by a neo-Gothic high altar in 1896 due to its poor condition.
Ulrichsbrunn chapel and healing spring
In 1720, a chapel was built over a water source on the site of a former Ulrich column. The water from this spring is said to have special healing powers for eye complaints.
